National Parks & Reserves | Northern Tanzania | Mt. Kilimanjaro | Zanzibar | Kenya & Tanzania Safaris

The state of Tanzania was formed from the union of Tanganyika, as it was originally called, and the independent island state of Zanzibar. Agriculture dominates the country's economy although tourism is now beginning to compete as a major foreign exchange earner. The present capital is Dar es Salaam on the coast and Arusha is the Northern administrative centre and where most safari's around the Northern circuit begin.

Tanzania is a land of superlatives, having a share in the largest and deepest lakes in Africa and within its borders lie the tallest mountain in Africa.

NATIONAL PARKS AND RESERVES

LAKE MANYARA NATIONAL PARK

Set like a shimmering jewel in the Great Rift Valley. Lake Manyara and the surrounding park is noted for its distinct eco-zones of ground water forest. Acacia woodland and open grassland. The result is a wide variety of game in a small area including Elephant, Buffalo, and Giraffe and for the lucky visitor, a glimpse of the famous tree-climbing Lions. The lake itself is a haven for birdlife and Hippo.

NGORONGORO CONSERVATION AREA

Considered by many to be the 8th wonder of the world. A huge and stunningly beautiful calderas full of wildlife living in their own "garden of Eden". Ngorongoro crater offers some of finest game viewing in Africa and one of the best places to see Rhino.

SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK

Serengeti, in the Maasai language means "endless plains". Huge herds of Wildebeest and Zebra dominate the park and their migration from North to South and vice versa from July to October provides an unequal wildlife spectacle. Attendant to these herds are predators such as Lion, Cheetah, Hyena and wild dogs. An awe-inspiring landscape immortalised in the film "Serengeti shall not die".

OLDUVAI GORGE

This is the Archaeological site, between Ngorongoro and Serengeti that was extensively excavated by Mary and Louis Leakey. Their finds include fossils of some of Man's earliest known ancestors, many of which are now displayed in the small museum overlooking the gorge.

TARANGIRE NATIONAL PARK

This delightful park is striking for its wide-boled Baobab trees, which dot the rolling countryside like Anemones on coral. The park is at its best during the seasons June to October and December to March when many of the migratory species come to the permanent waters of the Tarangire River.
