ZANZIBAR
Few names evoke such romantic connotations as the "spice island" of Zanzibar,
a slumbering paradise where green cloves, bread leaf, rice and coconuts
grow. The stone town of Zanzibar is a fascinating warren of narrow streets,
overhanging balconies and huge intricately carved doors. The
bustling Suk (bazaar) where traders frantically bargain, is full of the
pungent perfume of exotic spices such as cinnamon, cardomom and pili pili.
This is the town where the famous explorers such as Dr. Livingston, Stanley,
Speke, Burton, Grant, Thomson, Rebman and Krapf began their often fateful
journeys into the hazardous interior.
Outside
the town there are many places of interest to visit including the Maruhubi
palace-formerly the Sultan's harem, the kidichi baths, Mangapwani village,
the former site of the notorious slave pits and Kizimkazi with its recently
renovate 12th century Persian Mosque. Access to Zanzibar is by air from
Nairobi and Mombasa or by Hydrofoil from Dar es Salaam.
